Our Science Vision Statement
Intent: At Christ Church, our vision is to provide a Science curriculum full of opportunities to inspire and engage all children, so they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Pupils are given the opportunity to learn whilst having fun, through exciting, hands-on experiences that encourage exploration and questioning to develop their science capital.
Within our new thematic curriculum, we allow our teaching of science to be fluid and actively encourage children to ask questions, creating opportunities for them to be answered through their own enquiries. This enables pupils to take ownership of their learning to become more confident, life-long learners who will explore the world around them and apply skills from the wider curriculum.
Our Curriculum
Implementation:
Science is taught for a whole afternoon each week to allow time for thorough questioning, understanding and practical work, allowing pupils to gain the most out of their learning.
The school follows the Kent Scheme of Work which covers 20 units of study linked to the National Curriculum and supports teachers with their lesson planning. Each of the units shows progression in the key scientific knowledge and concepts required from Year 3 to Year 6.
One important aspect of science is ‘Working Scientifically’ which involves the processes of science and the skills required to conduct it. These include: the design of experiments; reasoning and debating scientific evidence; and analysing and interpreting data. The Kent Scheme of Work ensures these aspects of science are taught alongside the content to enable pupils to have a well-rounded experience of science.
Our curriculum is further enriched with science visits to Discovery Park and Living Land, providing pupils with an understanding of how science has changed lives and that it is vital to the world’s future. On site we have had visits from science professionals including a cardiologist and we are currently developing our science garden for further learning opportunities outdoors.
Progress of skills
Impact: Our Science Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
- A celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school;
- Tracking of knowledge in pre and post learning quizzes;
- Pupil discussions about their learning;
