CURRICULUM SUBJECTS
English will incorporate Creative Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Reading and Comprehension, Speaking-Listening, Drama, Handwriting, Non-fiction work and Research Skills. We expect the children to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every evening. Please ensure your child records this in their reading diary and that you sign it accordingly.
Maths will include Mental Arithmetic, Using and Applying Maths, Number Facts, Calculations, Understanding Number, Shape, Measures and Data Handling. We expect children to know all times-tables up to 12 x 12. Please work with your child to learn these vital number facts.
Year 6 topics this year will include: Monarchy, The Americas, WWII The Home Front, WWII The Battle of Britain and Sustainability
We also teach ICT, French, PE, Games, Art, Design and Technology, PHSE, Dance and Music.
EQUIPMENT
Your child will bring home English and Maths homework books (details in homework section) and a reading diary which will need to come home daily.
PE kits should be left in school as PE takes place regularly during the week. No jewellery should be worn, so if your child wears earrings please show them how to remove them or supply your child with Micro-pore tape to cover them. It is also asked that long hair is tied back for PE. A dark coloured track suit is needed for outdoor PE along with a plain white T-Shirt and trainers. For indoor dance and gymnastics a plain white T-Shirt and close fitting blue or black plain shorts along with plimsolls are required.
We would like your child to bring in the following equipment: pencil, sharpener, colouring pencils and a handwriting pen (not a biro). Your child will not need felt pens or gel pens. It is also important that water bottles are brought in daily.
PLEASE LABEL ALL EQUIPMENT CLEARLY
HOMEWORK
Homework for Year 6 is crucial. It will be an extension of work done in the classroom and there will be an emphasis on spelling, reading, writing and the reinforcement of mathematical skills. Maths homework will be set every Monday, to be brought back on Wednesday. Similarly, English will be set on a Thursday and returned on a Monday.
SCHOOL TRIPS
During the year we will plan a number of trips both locally and further afield, such as visiting Ramsgate’s Wartime Tunnels to support our History learning and Discovery Park at Sandwich to support Science learning. There is also the opportunity for children to come away on a residential trip to Kingswood near Ashford which will be packed full of exciting outdoor activities! On top of all this we take the children swimming at the Ramsgate swimming pool. You will receive a separate letter confirming details of when this will start. There is also the opportunity for children to come away on a residential trip to Kingswood near Ashford which will be packed full of exciting outdoor activities! On top of all this we take the children swimming at the Ramsgate swimming pool. You will receive a separate letter confirming details of when this will start. These trips can be extremely rewarding and stimulating for your child and any parental help on these trips is always appreciated. A consent form is signed at the beginning of the year, which covers all local trips by foot.
EXPECTATION:
We hope that all children in Year 6 will have by now developed a responsible and mature attitude towards each other and in their approach to their work. There will be a strong emphasis on each child ‘doing his/her best’ in order to achieve their potential. Our aim is to encourage independence in working yet also promote co-operation in group situations. Good effort and behaviour will be positively reinforced.
In Year 6 we aim to both manage any unacceptable behaviour as well as praising and rewarding excellent work and attitude from pupils.
For children whose actions adversely affect others we have implemented a three stage discipline procedure. The first incident will result in a warning from the child’s class teacher. Should there be a further occurrence during the day, the child will be moved within the class for 5 minutes. The final stage would mean the child sent to a Middle Manager for 30 minutes to think about their behaviour. They will then have to attend a ‘time out’ session during lunchtime play, supervised by the Assistant Head to complete their work, and the Class Teacher will contact home that evening to discuss.
We look forward to being able to reward children for hard work, effort and behaviour at school. Each week class teachers will choose a pupil to receive the ‘Head Teacher’s Award’ during Celebration Assembly. The school also awards a few children, whose behaviour is always exemplary with a ‘Care, Courtesy and Consideration’ trip three times a year – two children from each class. We will be looking for Year 6 children who demonstrate these qualities to be put forward for these days out. On a daily basis, children will be working towards ‘house points’ as recognition for an excellent piece of work or superb attitude in school.
We are very much looking forward to working with you and your children in the coming year. If, at anytime, you have a query or concern, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
Thank you for your support.
