English will  be integrated into our themes and is often based on a book. Learning incorporates Creative Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Reading and Comprehension, Speaking-Listening, Drama, Handwriting, Non fiction work and Research Skills. We expect the children to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every evening. Please ensure your child records this in their reading diary and that you sign it accordingly.

Year 5 themes are all about EXPLORATION! Themes are: Anglo Saxons, Vikings, The Age of Discovery, Antarctica, Earth and Space and Oceans.

We also teach Computing, French, PE, Games, Art, Design and Technology, PHSE, Dance and Music. There will be a strong emphasis on Science, themes include Forces, Materials, Earth and Space, Animals and their habitats and Animals including humans.

EQUIPMENT

Your child will have English and Maths homework (details in homework section) and a reading diary and reading book which will need to come home daily.

PE kits should be left in school as PE takes place regularly during the week.Your child will require the following kit, White PE top, Black or Navy shorts, dark tracksuit bottoms, trainers and plimsoles along with a warm top for cold weather. Socks are usually worn for games lessons during the winter months.

No jewellery should be worn, so if your child wears earrings please show them how to remove them or please provide ear tape if the earrings cannot be removed. It is also asked that long hair is tied back for PE. School. It is also important that water bottles are brought in daily.

HOMEWORK

SCHOOL TRIPS

During the year we will plan a number of trips both locally and further afield. A consent form is signed at the beginning of the year, which covers all local trips by foot.

EXPECTATION:

We hope that all children in Year 5 will have the opportunity to develop a responsible and mature attitude towards each other and in their approach to their work. There will be a strong emphasis on each child ‘doing his/her best’ in order to achieve their potential. Our aim is to encourage independence in working yet also promote co-operation in group situations. Good effort and behaviour will be positively reinforced.

In Year 5 we aim to both manage any unacceptable behaviour as well as praising and rewarding excellent work and attitude from pupils.

For children whose actions adversely affect others we have implemented a three stage discipline procedure. The first incident will result in a warning from the child’s class teacher. Should there be a further occurrence during the day, the child will be moved within the class for 5 minutes. The final stage would mean the child sent to a Middle Manager for 30 minutes to think about their behaviour. They will then have to attend a ‘time out’ session during lunchtime play, to complete their work, and the Class Teacher will contact home that evening to discuss.

We look forward to being able to reward children for hard work, effort and behaviour at school. Each week class teachers will choose a ‘star of the week’ from their class who will be congratulated during Celebration Assembly. The school also awards children with a ‘Care, Courtesy and Consideration’ trip three times a year. We will be looking for Year 5 children who demonstrate these qualities to be put forward for these days out. On a daily basis, children will be working towards dojo points as recognition for an excellent piece of work or superb attitude in school.

We are very much looking forward to working with you and your children in the coming year. If, at any time, you have a query or concern, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Thank you for your support.
